Retrophonic Funk Machine

The Bio

The Retrophonic Funk Machine (RFM) was a nine-piece instrumental jazz-funk band from Dunedin. Since first performing in 2005, the band gathered a large following both at home and on the road, a credit to its energetic live show.

RFM completed its second nationwide tour in February 2008, promoting their debut album Operating Manual, and has previously played alongside such acts as The Black Seeds, OdESSA, Nathan Haines and dDub. The band has also played at several music festivals, including the Parihaka International Peace Festival and the Canaan Downs Festival. Since its release in December 2007, demand for Operating Manual has exceeded expectations, remaining amongst the top ten highest selling albums at Real Groovy Dunedin for several months.

RFM's style is a blend of funk, dub and other influences underpinned by their jazz background; improvisation and spontaneity are an integral part of their sound. Their strong group spirit is evident on stage, and together with their passion for creating music every show is a fresh and unforgettable experience.
